Door colours don't seem right! Empty Door colours don't seem right!

Fri Mar 02, 2018 10:24 am
Hi all,

I am currently doing a design with PWS mornington shaker partridge grey doors, but in my renders, they look ivory!

Could be something to do with the light, but I've had a play around with all this and it doesn't seem to improve.

The colours always seem to be off when doing shaker doors, it always seems a lot better with a gloss/flat door.

Any ideas?

Hi Magga, try using pipette https://www.sttmedia.com/pipette.

Sometimes I find that the colours in the catalogues aren't what they should be and I hover pipette over the door colour from the brochure or online. This gives you your RGB colours and you can change it in your materials settings.

Cheers, I actually already had colorpicker installed for Firefox, I've altered them now, but I am just struggling to understand why they are so far off!

Also, when changing to a flat colour, you're losing the grained texture that should be there Sad

Can you post the drawing?
If materials are to diffuse there colour bounces to much in the GI phases so changes all the others in the room. Your woods looks very flat and matt and will bounce orange/browns onto the cabs...

Hi Darrel,

Thanks for the info.

When you say drawing? Do you mean the actual plan?

Okay Darrel, I have attached it. I've actually just changed the doors to a grey using colorpicker, but like you say, they're flat!

Cheers for the help.

In the Materials section you can clearly see the difference and how diffuse (very matt) colours can change all the colours in the room here - http://www.kbbcad.guru/t161-a-few-basic-material-settings-for-you-to-try-out#1129

You add a bump map for the grain but you will need to change the directions for rails, styles, plinths etc.

So Daz, your post regarding materials, there doesn't seem to be anything relating to door/wood grains. Do you have any rough values I can try, or is it just a case of messing around with it?

Cheers

Woods are covered to a degree with the coating... Laminate Wood is plastic... Real wood has a lacquer so these usually have to have a higher IOR value as light is passing through the coating and then the actual wood material below it hence the Experiement I did here - http://www.kbbcad.guru/t161-a-few-basic-material-settings-for-you-to-try-out#1133

What is the worktops in your drawing Matt? Laminate??

Hi Daz,

Thanks.

It is laminate in the render, but It should be solid oak, I couldn't find one that looked good for this, can you recommend one?

Also you couldn't post me the values from the lit appearance calculator for the windows and door could you please? I only have Excel viewer as I use bootcamp on a Mac and Excel is installed on the Mac side... d'oh!

Thanks

Yes it will be real wood (oak butchers block), oiled. I have used laminate in the design because I couldnt get any of the wood textures to look good, but feel free to change it yourself if you can make one look good?!

I've attached the laminate one I've used in the design.

Here is a quick setup...

I have not got all the same catalogues so things switched... but you should get the idea...
Try to avoid changing materials within the graphics as it is harder in the long run to do global changes..
I will upload the *kit file but you will need to point certain material textures to yours etc. adding a few accessories will improve the realism a lot...

No, the colours are as per your RGB edit but the reflection and glossiness have been changed as well as most of the other materials advanced settings.

*.kit and the background image I used (edited to get the colours more accurate) are HERE

I have been asked before but I lack the time with answering and posting on here, KFF and the TC Forum...oh not forgetting designing kitchens and bedrooms, selling them, ordering them, delivering them, putting things right etc...

How long have you been using ArtiCAD then Matt??

That’s fair enough Daz, I realise how busy we all can be!

Just about a year now, no previous CAD experience though and not had time to go on the articad training either.

Most of my designs turn out okay, it’s just non gloss ones that never come out as good! Interested to see how you’ve done the window as it appears you’ve spanned the same image across the 2 windows, which makes sense in the real world!

Thanks
